There’s much to consider when planning a ride, so I created individual posts for route planning, packing, and gear (coming soon).
There’s something to be said for just getting on the bike and seeing where you end up. But I plan as many details as possible to give the best possible chance of success. My perspective is that success is defined as executing that plan. During the ride itself, flexibility is essential. But the more effort that is put into pre-ride planning, the better experience the ride will be, especially when I’m pushing my personal limits of endurance.
These details are how I prepare for a long ride- whether it’s across a country or closer to home. Feel free to share comments or use the contact page to share your own ideas.
It probably goes without saying that this preparation and my personal experience is limited to developed areas. Riding in many parts of the world presents a host of other challenges to prepare for.
